Backroads Bikeway

Our Backroads Bikeway trails provide fourteen self-guided tours on paved area roads, with lengths from 5 to 60 miles. The routes follow secondary roads over rushing streams and through picturesque rolling hills, patchwork farmland and beautiful meadows, parks and forests. View area attractions such as the New Buffalo Railroad Museum on the Union Pier and Lake Michigan Trails. Enjoy a walk through Warren Woods State Park or a swim in Lake Michigan at Warren Dunes State Park on the Warren Dunes and Grand Mere Trails.

Brochure Available

A 10th edition of the Backroads Bikeway map is available. All fourteen self-guided tours are listed; a map and a list of directions and roads is provided for each tour. The brochure has information on bicycle rentals, the Three Oaks Spokes Bicycle Club, the Apple Cider Century bicycle tour as well as the Dewey Cannon Trading Company. Also listed are local accommodations for overnight stays.

The brochure can be purchased at the Dewey Cannon Trading Company. To defray publishing costs, there is a charge of 25¢ per brochure. However, we will mail out a brochure to you upon request if you provide a self-addressed #10 envelope with first class postage attached, and mail it in another envelope to:

Backroads Bikeway Trails

The Backroads Bikeway routes are suitable for all types of bicycles. Recommended equipment for riding these routes:

We offer the following marked routes for riders of all types and abilities. Click the trail name for a route map and instructions for each trail.

Spring Creek Trail - 5 Miles

Our shortest ride takes you on a brief tour of the countryside.

Forest Lawn Trail - 8 Miles

A short trail that offers lakes, streams, pastures, orchids and woodlands.

Posey Hill Trail - 13 Miles

This short route offers the challenge of a large hill to climb, but when you reach the top you'll find a "resting place", a shelter with picnic tables, at Posey Hill Chapel.

Elm Valley Trail - 15 Miles

A trail for the easy riders, a relaxing and carefree journey over flat quiet country roads. A Warren Woods State Park turnout offers restrooms, and a quiet setting for a family picnic.

Warren Woods Trail - 16 Miles

A trail designed for the casual cyclist, a must for the naturalist. A favorite resting place is Warren Woods State Park, a virgin forest with over 100 species of plants and trees.

Union Pier Trail - 20 Miles

Take the direct route to New Buffalo and the Lake Michigan shoreline. Visit the dining and shopping options in New Buffalo. Enjoy the cool breezes off the lake on a hot summer day. In Harbert, the St. Julian Winery tasting room lets you sample their locally-produced wines.

Spicer Lake Trail - 22 Miles

Another ride for nature lovers, this trail will take you to the Spicer Lake Nature Preserve, offering a wetlands boardwalk, birding, trails, as well as restroom facilities and drinking water.

Lake Michigan Trail - 30 Miles

Enjoy the day, pausing to walk the sandy beaches, climb the rolling sand dunes, and wade into the cool waters of Lake Michigan. The New Buffalo Railroad Museum (530 S. Whittaker, phone: 269-469-3166) offers historical railroad displays.

Warren Dunes Trail - 35 Miles

Pedal through the peaceful, rustic villages of New Troy, Baroda, Stevensville, Bridgman, and Sawyer. Taste the award-winning wines of Tabor Hill Winery. Climb the famous "Tower Hill" sand dunes, picnic, swim and camp at Warren Dunes State Park.

Madron Lake Trail - 37 Miles

Journey over shady, wooded backroads and small, rolling hills, through flowered meadows and patchwork farmland. Relax beside a clear, rushing trout stream and enjoy the smells, sound, and that "great to be alive" feeling that only nature and bicycling can offer.

Grand Mere Trail - 50 Miles

This tour will show you much of the Sunset Coast countryside. Watch for the ostrich farm on Singer Lake Road! Take a rest at the parks along the way. If you're hungry, stop by the Pizza Hut in Stevensville. Shop for bikes & accessories at the Cycle Path, 684 St. Joseph Ave., (269) 429-4483, also in downtown Stevensville. Detour into Warren Dunes State Park for a relaxing break from the riding.

Fernwood Nature Trail - 60 Miles

Our longest and most challenging tour! Stop to smell and see the flowers at the Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve. Have lunch at the Fernwood Cafe, open from 11 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 12 noon - 3 p.m. on Sunday; offering a selection of homemade soups and sandwiches and desserts for guests.
